Millions of copies of his historical fiction were sold worldwide in eight languages, with descriptions so accurate that his books were used as texts in American schools.
Publisher George Scott is Schoonovers great-nephew and was so inspired by these books he was determined to see them back in print. Now he is introducing this author to another generation of readers. Theres a whole new audience for these wonderful stories. Anyone who likes adventure, romance, and political and religious history will love these books.
He had a wonderful storytelling sense and could really keep you turning the pages, according to his MacMillan editor in a 1980 Newsday interview. He was a marvelous researcher and a good stylist.
Schoonover was born in Iowa, graduated from the University of Wisconsin and moved to New York to work for a large advertising agency in the 1940s. After his wartime service he spent his free days in the New York Public Librarys Central Manhattan Branch researching what became his first big seller, The Burnished Blade.
Scott plans to release nine historical novels by Schoonover, together for the first time in a newly designed collection.
The first new edition in The Schoonover Collection to be released is Queens Cross, the story of Isabella of Castile, Spains greatest monarch. Her dedication to her people and her religion led to establishing Christian Europe as a powerful political force in the medieval world. The epic re-conquest of Grenada from the Moors in 1492 is one of the most important events of European history and even today is referenced by Islamic leaders in their struggles against the West.
